WIT Class Policies
We’re thrilled that you’re interested in taking the plunge with a class at Washington Improv Theater. Here’s some basic information that you should know about our classes as you make your decision.

Location
All Washington Improv Theater classes (except Sunday classes) take place at CentroNía, a bilingual charter school located at 1420 Columbia Road NW in Columbia Heights. CentroNía is located one block south of the Columbia Heights Metro station, near the 14th Street bus lines and just down the street from the Circulator bus. Sunday classes take place at Source at 1835 14th Street NW. [Map here] Source is located two blocks from the U Street-Cardozo Metro station (13th Street exit) and two blocks from the 14th Street Circulator stop.

Attendance Policy
WIT's classes meet for two and a half hours once a week for 8 weeks.  Please check your schedule carefully to ensure that you can attend all class dates. If you expect to miss more than two of the eight classes in the session, you should wait until the next term to take a class. Students who miss more than two class sessions of any class must re-take that class before advancing to the next level. Students who miss more than three class sessions may be dropped from the class at the instructor's discretion; no refund will be issued.

WIT does not offer make-up classes. Dropping in on different sections is not advisable because we wish to respect the progress of each individual class. If you must miss a class, please check in with your instructor to see what you missed.

Student Policy
WIT's classes program strives to create a welcoming and safe creative atmosphere for all. Students are a part of creating this atmosphere and those whose conduct violates it will be removed from class by WIT, with their tuition refunded. WIT does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, sexual preference, or physical disability. That said, students with physical disabilities are asked to contact WIT before registering for a class, so we can do our best to provide an accommodating class experience

WIT retains absolute control over its class enrollment. WIT has the right to remove any student from class at any time for any reason, on a temporary or on a permanent basis, at WIT’s sole discretion with full tuition grantedWIT also reserves the right to restrict registration to any student, on a temporary or on a permanent basis. WIT does not remove a student from class lightly, but sometimes it may be necessary to maintain a welcoming and safe creative atmosphere.

Transfers and Refund Policy
Class registration includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. Class withdrawal refunds can be processed up to eight days prior to the class start date. If you must transfer from one class into another, a $25 transfer fee will be assessed. No refunds or credits may be issued to any student who withdraws less than one week prior to the first day of class, or after a class has commenced.

Eligibility
Advancement in WIT classes is not automatic. Students advance to the next level in the curriculum when they meet attendance requirements and/or their instructor deems them ready to move on. Repeating a class is a common occurrence and students often choose to repeat or revisit a level of the curriculum to build greater mastery.

Please review the class description to ensure you meet any prerequisites for the class you select. WIT will contact you if we have questions about your registration.

Weather/Cancellation Policy
WIT classes must abide by the CentroNía’s availability. For information about weather closings, check DCPS website and the WIT Facebook page and Twitter account. As soon as we know about the availability of the school, we will e-mail students and put information online. In case of a cancellation, a make-up class will be scheduled.

Got questions? We may have beaten you to the punch. Take a look at our FAQ:

Do I have to be "funny" to take a class?
Heck no. If you have a great sense of humor already, that's awesome; our program is definitely for you. But the classes are about finding the humor in yourself and in the world around you. The only prerequisites for our Foundations of Improv class are an open mind and a desire to have fun.

I've done improv before, which class should I start with?
Every training program is different, with their own set of values, vocabulary, and approaches to improv. WIT is dedicated to making sure that you enter into our program where it is right for you and for your potential classmates! Please email the Program Manager at classes@washingtonimprovtheater.com and be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Where did you previously study improv (university, other improv school)?
  • Who were your instructors?
  • What courses did you take with them and when (month/year)?

If, after the first class, you and/or your instructor feel like you would be better suited to a different class, we can arrange for you to transfer classes at no extra charge.

What’s this about a showcase?
Every class presents a culminating showcase at the end of the quarter. It’s a chance to invite your friend and family to see what you’ve been doing for the past eight weeks. Rest assured, it’s the most generous and supportive audience you’ll ever have and it’s a great low-stakes experience for everyone to get a chance on stage.

How big are WIT’s classes, typically?
WIT classes are typically about 12 students – no bigger than 14 and no less than 6. Any given class needs at least 6 students registered in order to continue on to the term – any less and that class will be cancelled and all students notified so they may make additional plans to move to a different course. There is no transfer fee applied should students have to move classes due to low enrollment.

Are there any age restrictions on your classes?
Our classes are for students ages 18 and older. We do not offer classes for children or teenagers at this time. For the under-18 crowd, we’d recommend checking out Wobble Rocket or The Comedy Spot.

You gave me this really awesome discount code -- where do I put it?
On the Eventbrite registration page, just above the big green “Register” button, there is some large red text that says “Enter Promotional Code” – click that, enter in the code, and hit “Apply.” You should see the page refresh with the discount applied to all classes. Once you select the class you desire, then hit “Register.” Promotions cannot be applied after a transaction is already completed.

Is there street parking around CentroNía? Source?

There is some resident two-hour parking around the Columbia Heights neighborhood near CentroNía, which is off of Columbia Road NW (1420 Columbia Rd, NW). There is also metered parking on 14TH Street as well as a parking garage in the DC USA Shopping Complex. If you plan to drive, aim to arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. so that you leave plenty time to circle around for parking.

Near Source Theater (1835 14TH Street NW) there is also metered parking on 14TH Street and 2 hour parking in the residential neighborhoods surrounding 14TH and T Streets. There is also a pay-to-park lot on 14TH and S Streets NW. I've done every level and I want to teach. How do I do that? We love your enthusiasm! WIT hires teaching assistants with intent to train them up as a member of the WIT faculty. As with any hiring decision, this is based on a variety of circumstances; need, recommendations, involvement in the community, mastery of the craft and long-term interest in teaching for WIT. We find that interest in becoming a TA far outweighs our current capacity. WIT will contact eligible candidates when we are in the market for recruits.

I had a great time in 1A! I want to stay with my comrades forever. What do I do?
You should all sign up for the next class together! No class offered the day your cohort wants to take it? You should email the Program Manager and see if there is a teacher in the wings who could teach it.

Rats! The class I want to take is sold out. What do I do? Is there a waiting list?
Email classes@washingtonimprovtheater.com with the subject line “Waitlist” with the day and level of class you are interested in taking. Should a spot become available, you will be notified immediately by email and given 24 hours to respond to sign up for the class. The wait list is disabled one week after the class commences. If you sign up for another class in the meantime, you will be charged the $25 transfer fee to transfer classes should a spot become available.

What is your refund policy?
Every class registration includes a $50 non-refundable deposit – these refunds can be processed up to 8 days prior to the class start date. No refunds or credits may be issued to any student who withdraws less than one week prior to the first day of class, or after a class has commenced.

What should I bring to class with me?
Wear comfortable clothes that will allow you to move around. You may want to dress in layers in case you get hot or cold. Many classes take a break in the middle so you may want a snack or a drink for that.

A small notebook to jot down your improv epiphanies isn't a bad idea, but no other materials are necessary for the first class. Teachers will contact their individual classes should students need to bring any materials.

Who teaches WIT classes?
Classes are taught by experience improv performers, many of whom are members of WIT’s ensembles or Harold Teams. All of our teachers have either gone through WIT's class program or have commensurate teaching experience at other improv institutions. Take a look at some more information about our teachers on our Faculty page.
